Designed by Alco, an established steam locomotive company, the FA was designed to compete with the EMD (GM) E- and F-Unit early diesel locomotives.  Though more striking in appearance, the Alcos soon faded from the scene as GM dominated the early diesel scene.  The FA was designed for freight service; the complementary PA was designed for passenger operation.  The models shown above in UP yellow and gray are by Lionel, and are a 1994 reissue of the 1950 Anniversary set.  The prototype is shown below, in both UP (upon which the model was based) and  in the striking Canadian Pacific livery.
