|4-4-4-4 Duplex Steam Locomotives|
The 4-4-4-4 Pennsylvania class T-1 Duplex was designed and built in the early 1940's. This was a non-articulated locomotive with four cylinders (compare to an articulated 4-cylinder locomotive such as the Allegheny or Challenger). Designed to pull long trains at high speed, they were prone to slippage, and by the early 1950's had been retired. In the photos above, the MTH scale model issued in 2000 is shown. By comparing them to the photo of the prototype below, you can see just how good the model is.
In the photo below, it can be seen how some of the streamlined cowling has been removed to provide better access to the mechanical systems.
