The 4-8-0 Twelve-Wheelers (also called Mastodons) were developed for freight hauling at the end of the 19th century.  Never terribly popular, they were soon replaced by other, more powerful locomotives.  The one above is a CNJ camelback; the one below a more traditional cab-behind from the Morristown & Erie.
